SAIC is actively seeking an experienced Principal Mainframe Developer to join our dynamic team serving our Department of Veterans Affairs Corporate Portfolio clients across the entire U.S. As a Principal Mainframe Developer, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining critical VA financial Management mainframe and reporting systems. This position requires strong expertise in IBM mainframe development along with expertise in working with enterprise financial systems. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including developers, business analysts, and stakeholders, to lead and deliver high-quality mainframe development projects and mission-critical systems support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain applications using mainframe technologies with primary skillsets, emphasis, and extensive experience provided in: JCL, COBOL, VSAM, IMS DB/DC, CICS transactions, SFTP, SORT, IBM Z/OS, and CA7.
  • Provide, lead, and demonstrated expertise in mainframe SAS (experience in creating reports using SAS).
  • Provide, lead, and demonstrated expertise in mainframe and development-supporting tools, including: Endevor, file aid, JIRA, SNOW, and Microsoft Studio.
  • Possess and demonstrate excellent analytical/problem solving skills.
    Ability to provide 24/7 on-call production support.
  • Implement best practices for coding, security, Section 508 compliance, and performance optimization.
  • Work with business analysts to understand and translate business requirements into technical specifications.
  • Work closely with project managers and stakeholders to understand project requirements and deliver solutions on time.
  • Participate in code reviews, project planning, and estimation.
  • Ensure high-quality code through testing and continuous integration practices.
  • Identify and resolve technical issues and bugs.
  • Continuously improve and optimize the existing code base.
  • Analyze business requirements and translate them into technical specifications. 
  • Maintain documentation of the system architecture, design, and code.

Qualifications

Required Skills:

  • Extensive, advanced skills in mainframe technologies, including: JCL, COBOL, VSAM, IMS DB/DC, CICS transactions, SFTP, SORT, IBM Z/OS, and CA7.
  • Expertise and experience in mainframe SAS (creating reports using SAS).
  • Demonstrated leadership and expertise in mainframe and development-supporting toolsets, including: Endevor, file aid, JIRA, SNOW, and Microsoft Studio.
  • Demonstrated excellence in analytical/problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated use of and understanding of the software development lifecycle (SDLC) processes.
  • Demonstrated use of and understanding of Agile/Scrum methodologies.
  • Experience with financial systems and knowledge of industry regulations (Preferred).
  • Technical development team lead experience. 

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related field. A master's degree is a plus.
  • At least 5-7 years of experience in mainframe development and financial systems support, with significant experience in IBM mainframe development, support, and related technologies.
  • Ability to obtain a VA Position of Public Trust- Medium Background Investigation (MBI).

Target salary range: $80,001 - $120,000. The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for this position based on experience and other factors.
